Why Does Pneumatic RetinopexyHave Such Varied Outcomes?

(2023)

Pneumatic retinopexy (PR) is used to repair retinal detachments ideally in phakic patients who have a single break or multiple smaller breaks in the superior 8 clock hours of the fundus. The single-procedure success rate of PR is highly variable and has been reported to range between 43.7% and 95.5%, with a mean of 74.4% across all studies.

Expansion of tele-ophthalmology for diabetic diabetic retinopathy screening during the COVID-19 pandemic

(2023)

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults, ages 20-74. The tele-ophthalmology program was launch at UCD Health in 2018 and was expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic to improveearly screening for diabetic retinopathy. Assess diabetic retinopathy screening utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study evaluates follow-up encounters and outcomes.

Impact of portable artificial vision device (OrCam Read) on visionrelated quality-of-life in patients with low vision due to TBI

(2022)

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury to the head that disrupts the function of the brain. Visual dysfunction occurs in over 70% of patients following a TBI. The commonly reported symptoms include photophobia, blurred vision, and visual field defect. Very limited evidence of vision-related rehabilitation is available. OrCam Read is a handheld artificial vision device comprised of a “smart” camera that reads texts from both printed surfaces and digital screens. It uses a laser to indicate reading and a camera captures an image and converts the text into audio, which is transmitted through the device’s speaker or Bluetooth devices.

How is spinal cord function measured in degenerative cervical myelopathy? A systematic review

(2022)

The most common cause of spinal cord dysfunction is degenerative cervical myelopathy. It manifests as spinal cord compression and neurological impairment. Since the spinal cord is complex and works with many organs, it is challenging to measure spinal cord function in patients with DCM. mJOA is widely used to assess DCM but is problematic due to comorbidities and interobserver bias.

Prevalence of Evaluation and Treatment of Osteoporosis After Low-Energy Hip Fractures at a Level 1 Academic Tertiary Care Trauma Center with a Multi-Disciplinary Geriatric Hip Fracture Program

(2022)

Osteoporosis is a major public health issue, with more than 53 million people in the United States either having osteoporosis or at increased risk for developing osteoporosis. Osteoporosis places patients at risk for fragility fractures which are associated with a decreased health-related quality of life and substantial financial burden on the healthcare system. Previous studies discovered a low rate of osteoporosis evaluation and treatment in adult patients after a hip fragility fracture though these studies need to be updated to determine if improvements have occurred over the last decade. Thus, the primary aim of this study was to evaluate rates of osteoporosis evaluation and treatment in adult patients following low-energy hip fractures.

The Burden of Eye Disease & Eye Care Utilization Pattern In Patients At An Asian Free Healthcare Clinic

(2021)

Visual impairment decreases quality of life, impacts health outcomes, and places substantial economic burden in the United States. Racial/ethnic disparities exist in the rates of eye disease and eye care utilization, with Chinese Americans having lower rates of utilization than African Americans and whites.  To meet the eye care needs of Sacramento’s large Asian community, U.C. Davis Eye Center and Paul Hom Asian Clinic (PHAC) partnered together to offer no-cost ophthalmologic services for underserved Asian Americans and immigrants. There is limited data examining patterns of eye disease prevalence and eye care utilization for high-risk populations in an Asian free healthcare clinic setting. Our study aims to understand these patterns at Paul Hom Eye Clinic and identify potential barriers related to follow-up management.
