The Teaching and Learning Anthropology Journal welcomes analytical, reflective, and review articles on the topic of teaching and learning anthropology. The journal also publishes original undergraduate and graduate student anthropological research and writing.

Submissions may be sent at any time during the year and will be evaluated for publication following a review process. Research and analytical articles are undergo an anonymous peer review process. All other content undergoes editor review. 

We invite submissions in the following categories:

• Original research or analytical articles of no more than 8,000 words, excluding references; 
• Commentaries or reflections of approximately 2,500 words; these may include reports/discussion of teaching experiments or activities and editorial-style reflections on teaching issues;
  
• Reviews of books, films, or other media of approximately 1,000 words;
• Student manuscripts, including original research, op-eds, reflections, and course projects. These may vary in length and format and will be evaluated individually for length by the editors. 

Please use the following guidelines when submitting manuscripts:

• Submit manuscripts and supporting materials electronically through the eScholarship site. Click on the red "Submit" button at the top right corner of our eScholarship site home page. If you are a new user you will need to create a new account.
  
• Manuscripts should meet the length requirements specified above.
  
• Research and analytical manuscripts (i.e., those submitted as Articles) should be anonymized with all identifying information removed prior to submission.
• For Article submissions, suggested names and contact information from potential reviewers may also be included. 

Once your manuscript is accepted, please format it according to the TLA Journal Submission Template with citations and references in Chicago Author-Date format.

Special Issue Information

Teaching and Learning Anthropology publishes one special issue a year and invites editors to send proposals by email (teachinglearninganthro@gmail.com). Proposals should include:

• Names, position/affiliation(s), and contact details of the guest editor(s)
• A working title for the proposed Special Issue
• An abstract for the issue that includes a description of the project and proposed content and demonstrates a clear, compelling, and timely contribution to teaching and learning anthropology;
• A list of names and affiliations of (provisional) authors  along with a 100-word abstract for each manuscript. Manuscripts in any of the categories published by the journal may be included in special issues (i.e., Articles, Commentaries, Reviews, and/or Student work).

The managing editorial team evaluates all special issue proposals. If the proposal is recommended for publication, one of the journal editors will work with you to produce the special issue. This will include developing a production timeline, helping to co-ordinate responses to reviews of each manuscript, and other general support.

As with any manuscript submitted for publication in the Teaching and Learning Anthropology Journal, each contribution to a special issue will need to be submitted through the eScholarship site and will undergo either peer or journal editor review. Acceptance of a special issue proposal does not guarantee the acceptance of every article within the proposal. We encourage special issue editors to work with authors before submission and throughout the process to help them address reviewer feedback.
