Xenosurveillance of Wild Pigs Using Mosquito Bloodmeals

Abstract

Feral swine are an abundant invasive species that are heavily managed in the United States. We used DNA extracted from the bloodmeals of mosquitos to detect free ranging feral swine in south central Florida. DNA was of a sufficient quantity and quality that downstream applications such as genotyping or Sangar sequencing were feasible. Preliminary analyses were able to detect feral swine in blood-fed mosquitos.
