The Journal of Transnational American Studies (JTAS) is a peer-reviewed online journal that seeks to broaden the interdisciplinary study of American cultures in a transnational context. Founded in 2009 by Shelley Fisher Fishkin, Shirley Geok-lin Lim, Takayuki Tatsumi, and Alfred Hornung, JTAS functions as an open-access forum for Americanists in the global academic community, where scholars are increasingly interrogating borders both within and outside the nation and focusing on the multiple intersections and exchanges that flow across those borders. JTAS is a new critical conduit that seeks to bring together innovative transnational work from diverse but often disconnected sites in the US and abroad.

JTAS features a range of perspectives on Transnational American Studies across, and among, the disciplines. We have a unique format in which we publish new essays by emerging and established scholars alongside special forums which are guest edited and which engage Transnational American Studies from a particular focus. The Winter issue of JTAS also features special forums that offer new perspectives on scholarship in the field of Transnational American Studies: the Forward section (edited and with a framing introduction by Jennifer Reimer) features excerpts from new books relevant to transnational Americanist scholarship, while the Reprise section (edited and introduced by Brian Russell Roberts) showcases Americanist work that has attained new relevance in Transnational American Studies.
