    Between 2011 and 2016, California enacted a set of 51 policy measures addressing workers’ rights, environmental issues, safety net programs, taxation, and infrastructure and housing. This paper labels these policies as the California Policy Model (CPM), and assesses some of the claims of critics and supporters regarding their impact on the state’s economy. It analyzes arguments made by critics that contend the CPM would reduce employment and slow economic growth. The paper also evaluates supporters’ arguments that the CPM would raise wages for low-wage workers, increase access to health insurance, and lower wage inequality. It finds results that suggest the CPM did in fact lead to increased wage growth and health insurance access and decreased wage inequality without reducing employment or economic growth.

      Prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) has been used to analyze metal ion oxyanion materials that have multiple applications, including medicine, materials, catalysts, and electronics. The significance for the need for accurate, highly sensitive analyses for the materials is discussed in the context of quality control of end products containing the parent element in each material. Applications of the analytical data for input to models and theoretical calculations related to the electronic and other properties of the materials are discussed.

        Twin Blades is an adaptation of a work in progress story in which a country attempting reunification undergoes invasion, leaving its hope to the heirs of each of the country's two states. In this game, however, the player takes on the role of a nameless soldier, who must navigate the chaos of the war, making important choices along the way, potentially deviating from the original story. The game's story is one whose themes ambition, loyalty, trust, and war.

              When I received a notice from CSW about an upcoming workshop on time management, climate issues for female academics, and work/life balance, I was eager to attend. Anxiety among graduate students is endemic. Yet women have an added pressure. CSW Director Kathleen McHugh introduced this workshop, which is part of CSW’s new mentoring initiative, noting that the issue of women and family planning is a topic in academia that is not necessarily explored in the professional context. The question she asked of the speakers was: “How can one be an academic and have a life and family?” Together, the speakers answered this question with caution and hope.

                  In English, categories of solid objects (e.g., couch) are similar in shape, but vary in color and material; categories ofnonsolid substances (e.g., yogurt) are similar in material, but vary in color and shape (Samuelson & Smith, 1999). Althougheven infants can discriminate between how solids and nonsolids should behave (Hespos et al., 2009), increasing evidencesuggests recognizing specific substances is difficult for children (Perry et al., 2014). This begs the question, what do adults evenknow about nonsolids? Twenty adults drew 23 familiar solids and nonsolids. 116 participants from Amazon Mechanical Turkattempted to identify each drawing. Participants more accurately identified drawings of solids (M=.70) than nonsolids (M=.25),X2(1)=13.87, p=.0002. Drawings of nonsolids leading to accurate identification often depicted prototypical containers (e.g.,milk carton). These results suggest visual recognition—even of nonsolids—is aided by shape and that adults may conceptualizenonsolids as more object-like than was previously thought.
