Abstract: The modern vaginal speculum is used in the field of obstetrics and gynecology in order to hold the vaginal walls open for the purpose of conducting pelvic exams. Routine pelvic exams are highly recommended for women above the age of 18 in order to screen for cancer and other infections of the female anatomy. The problems with the modern speculum deal with its form and function. The 2-billed design of the speculum is grossly outdated, and is often the source of pain and discomfort for patients as it pinches and contorts the vaginal opening. In terms of function, the modern speculum is difficult for physicians to use effectively as it severely limits their field of view into the vaginal cavity. The present research team proposes a redesign of the vaginal speculum that improves both form and function in order to provide a more comfortable experience for patients and increased usability for physicians.
