Great! Let's begin.
You are sitting on a wooden table in a square room with off white walls and hardwood flooring. A simple red carpet rests on the floor, illuminated by the light shining through the windows. The room contains no furniture other than the wooden table you appear to be sitting on and [[three open doors->Doors]].
(set: $study to false)
(set: $kitchen to false)Ok then.
Somehow you have lost the game before it even started.
Was being a book on a quest to find a bookshelf just too much for you or something.
Whatever.
Just click [[this->Game Over]].(set: $kitchen to true)
You are standing on a very comfortable rug at the entrance of the kitchen. There doesn't seem to be any bookshelves around. I mean, why would there be? You're in a kitchen after all.
You're already here though so you might as well explore for a bit.
In front of you is a [[table->Table]].
To your right is a [[pantry->Pantry]].
To your left is a counter with a [[drawer->Drawer]].
(set: $table to false)
(set: $pantry to false)
(set: $drawer to false)You are now outside.
Wow, it's actually really nice out today. It's warm and the sun is out and... oooh, would you look at that?
There is one nice looking skateboard just lying right next to the curb. I wonder what would happen if you were to, I don't know, maybe ride it? I think that would be pretty fun, don't you? I know you're supposed to be looking for a bookshelf, but think about how much fun it would be to ride that thing.
At least [[go look at it->Skateboard]].(set: $study to true)
You enter the study. Inside there is an office chair and a wooden desk. On the wall to the right of the desk is a ladder, and on the floor there is a really ugly rug, like really ugly. On the rug there is a bottle, a few loose papers, and a potted plant. And in front of the desk on the opposite wall is a bookshelf.
Well, that was easy.
You should probable go to the [[bookshelf->Bookshelf]] now.You wobble over to the center of the main room.
(if: not $kitchen)[The door to your right leads to the [[kitchen->Kitchen]].]
The door in front of you leads [[outside->Outside]].
(if: not $study)[The door to your left leads to the [[study->Study]].]As you approach the bookshelf you realize this was, in fact, not easy. I mean, you're a book how did you expect to get to the top of the shelf?
Maybe you can jump up there. Oh wait, you don't seem to have any legs. Well, that is a problem.
I got it! You can use your hands to climb... nope, you don't have hands either.
As a book it seems that you can only swivel and hobble around, which isn't really that useful. You might want to sit over there by that [[ladder->Ladder]] and brainstorm for a bit.Ah, yes! The ladder. Maybe you could use that to get to the top of the bookshelf.
You begin to shove the ladder, making your way one push at a time towards the shelf. Thankfully, the ladder has wheels, so it's not that hard to push.
Honestly, if you just gave it one really strong push I'm sure you could send the ladder all the way to the shelf just using the momentum. There's really no down side to this so you might as well try it.
[[Push it->Fire]]. You push the ladder towards the bookshelf in one huge shoving motion. The ladder nearly makes it, but catches the end of the really ugly rug.
The ladder begins to fall and knocks over a lit candle on a nearby shelf that you didn't seem to notice when you first entered the room. The candle crashes onto the floor and sets fire to the ugly rug.
That's not good.
You have to put that fire out. Maybe you should douse the fire with whatever is in that [[bottle->Bottle]].You knock over the bottle causing it to spill out the liquid that was previously trapped inside. The liquid seems to be spreading out over the fire. The liquid isn't putting out the fire. Actually, the fire seems to be more intense than before. Maybe, you shouldn't have done that.
You read the label of the bottle. "Rubbing Alcohol. Warning Flammable. Keep away from heat, spark, electrical, fire or flame."
Well that's too bad. Maybe next time try to use water instead.
Try smothering the fire with something. Those [[loose papers->Papers]] might do the trick. You toss paper after paper on top of the fire, however, it seems the flames are spreading faster than before. That's because paper is flammable. Come on, everybody knows that. You're a book aren't you supposed to hold knowledge or something.
Whatever. At least you destroyed that really ugly rug, but there is no way you're putting this fire out now. I mean, you're just a book, and you don't have fingers so there is no way you're calling the fire department.
I think you should just [[leave->Doors]].You approach the skateboard.
You admire the skateboard.
You hop onto the skateboard.
Your hop causes the skateboard to move.
You begin to ride the skateboard.
You cannot stop the skateboard.
Looks like you are going for a [[ride->Ride 1]].The skateboard seems to be moving downhill with you on top of it. It appears to be getting faster, but you don't have legs so its not like you can stop it. Maybe you can control it by leaning? Also, you may want to do it quickly because you're about to hit that trashcan.
[[Lean->Ride 2]].You swiftly avoid the trashcan, which would be pretty easy for most people, but you're a book so that's pretty impressive. However, you still can't stop this thing and you still need to find a bookshelf.
Wait. What's that up ahead? Oh, it looks like there's a fork in the road. I wonder which turn you should take. Let's see. Apparently, if you go to the left you'll head to Main Street, but if you turn right you'll end up in the City Dump.
[[Take a left onto Main Street.->Main Street]]
[[Take a right to the City Dump.->City Dump]]Well, it looks like you ended up in the city dump. Shocker. I mean why did you think this was the way to get to a bookshelf. I really thought that a book would have at least some common sense to know that a city dump isn't where anyone wants to be.
And the board stopped too so you can't go anywhere. I guess you just live here now. Oh well, sucks to be you. [[Have fun living in the dump.->Game Over]]You take a left onto Main Street and end up in a pretty downtown plaza. I think you really made the right choice coming here. It's very nice. Much nicer than I imagine a city dump would be. There are shops and restaurants and a little park too, but where are you going to find a bookshelf.
As you're trying to find a bookshelf, the skateboard hits a curb and launches you into the air. You crash land in front of the public library.
I guess it must be your lucky day.
You should probably [[go in->Library]].You enter the library and there are rows and rows of bookshelves carrying dozens of books. It's magnificent.
It looks like you finally made it. Now all that's left is to figure out if you're a fiction or non-fiction book. Actually, who cares? Just go pick out a shelf that suits you. If I were you, I would steer clear of the mystery section, that place is really shady, it has murder written all over it.
You know what? I think you would really like the adventure section. For some reason it's a very exciting place. You should [[check it out->Adventure]].You go over to the adventure section and pick out a sturdy bookshelf with lots of living space. You hop onto one of the conveniently placed ladders and make your way to the top. You place yourself right in the middle of the shelf, snug between two books.
You've done it! You have finally achieved what every book hopes to one day accomplish.
[[Congratulations!->The End]]The End
You have completed your quest of finding a bookshelf and shall now be remembered as a legend for years to come.(set: $drawer to true)
You hop up onto the counter and attempt to open the drawer.
You can't open the drawer.
You don't have hands.
Maybe if you [[jump on the handle->Spoons]] it will open.(set: $pantry to true)
You enter the pantry. There are many shelves but none of them are designed to hold books. What a waste.
I think it would be best if you just [[go back to the entrance->Kitchen Again]].(set: $table to true)
You hobble onto a nearby chair and hop up onto the table. You see a group of suspicious individuals at the other end.
Crap. It's a gang of knives. I heard a rumor that you owe those guys some serious cash. Is that true? Because if it is, I suggest you pay up. You have an adventure to go on, there's no need to get sidetracked by a gang of dangerous kitchen dwelling knives.
Oh no! They're staring right at you. Knives don't have faces but they still look pretty scary. You should probably [[go back->Kitchen Again]].You successfully open the drawer. Good job.
You look into the drawer and notice a group of disgrunteled spoons. It turns out they were sleeping and you just woke them up. Nice one, asshole.
I think it's best if you just [[leave->Kitchen Again]].Up until now, you've been avoiding this section of the kitchen, after all refrigerators make up some number of deaths in the United States per year. Better to be safe than sorry.
You hear the noise from behind the refrigerator again. It sounds like metal scratching. I doubt that it's a clue for finding a bookshelf, but you never know.
[[Check out that mysterious noise that may or may not lead to a bookshelf->Investigate]].
[[Leave the kitchen->Doors]].You're back at the entrance of the kitchen.
(if: not $table)[In front of you is a [[table->Table]].]
(if: not $pantry)[To your right is a [[pantry->Pantry]].]
(if: not $drawer)[To your left is a counter with a [[drawer->Drawer]].]
(if: $drawer and $pantry and $table)[You hear a noise coming from behind the [[refrigerator->Fridge]].]You check out the ominous noise behind the refrigerator. There doesn't seem to be anyone or anything there.
Well, that was anticlimactic.
Suddenly, you feel a sharp pain on your back side. You fall to the floor, slowly but surely losing consciousness. A bag is placed over you, preventing you from seeing the perpetrators of this violent act. They then begin to drag your body across the floor to what one can only assume is a secondary location.
[[You pass out->Sink]]. You wake up. You're laying on a cold, damp, stainless steel surface and above you there is a faucet with slowly dripping water. You realize your body's been dumped in the sink.
You look around and notice the gang of knives at the handles of the faucet. You should've paid them back when you had the chance. They turn the handle and out of the faucet comes a deluge of water that soaks every inch of your book body.
Your papers are ruined, your title is barely readable, and your stitching is coming apart. I guess this is it. Your time has finally come. If only you hadn't checked out that noise behind the refrigerator.
Well, I guess I'll see you in that big bookshelf up in the sky.
[[*Dies->Game Over]].Game Over
You were not able to find a bookshelf and therefore have failed your quest. You are a book.
And I can tell from the way that you are just sitting there that you are a bored book. And even though you don't have a face, your expression says that you want to go on an adventure.
What kind of adventure you may ask? Well, one that leads to glory, money, respect, and most importantly a new home, a temple for books simply known as a [[bookshelf->Intro 2]].I mean what's better than that? All the popular books live on bookshelves.
You could be like one of those New York Times bestsellers that people are always talking about. I don't really know what a New York Times bestseller is, but I'm sure they're pretty cool if everyone keeps bringing them up all the time.
So, what do you say? Are you ready to go on an adventure and find a bookshelf?
[[Yes->Yes]] or [[No->No]].
